What is or isn't the identity of the region has little to do with what's happening and more to do with how it has been framed for you. I'd actually say most of the shit in the region has been facilitated by religion but motivated by politics. Religion makes it easier to radicalize people, but ultimately what is being responded to is a political issue such as where the oil money goes, the continuous bombings of innocent families and tribes, etc. etc.

Well of course they used religion as a tool to do bad things. I have always thought that was kind of the whole point of religion, well modern ones anyway.

the problem here is that human beings are inherently narrow minded because it helps us form an identity as a single entity and as a group. it's very easy to cling to one single idea or belief so you could use it to counter another perceived negativity. that is just basic human instinct at play. there is no fixing this so why give a fuck at all.
