But you say the "arguments" are compelling, when they're far from it. To use the ETOPS issue I mentioned earlier, ETOPS stands for Extended Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards. These standards basically dictate how far from a diversion airfield an aircraft is allowed to fly. The reasons aircraft don't fly over Antarctica on southern routes is that there are no approved diversion stations for commercial aircraft on that continent, not that it "doesn't exist".
