because churches and charities wont further society, if you want to create a strong society you should probably help the people in your society who are struggling, lets be real here, without help from others you go down too, regardless of how independent you think you are.

e: we are arguing past each other kind of, we agree that the abuse of these systems needs to be curbed, i'm just saying social safety nets are integral to society as we know it.

MY money and YOUR money is going to the welfare fund to support single homeless men too, why don't you have any issue with that? wouldn't you rather your money went to some poor family's kids with working parents who just don't make enough money to make it through than have it go to capable single guys who have jobs and go sell their food stamps and buy booze with it?
