Been a while since I've played, but I know the tutorial near the start teaches you this stuff.

There's always some trio

something armored for auron / kimahri ?? (Not sure about this one)
something fast for Tidus (not sure again)
some type of element based monster, like an ice one, which you would use Lulu for because her fire would basically one shot it
some flying scrub monster like a bug, melee chars had a low hit rate on them, Wakka is ranged and would hit them and do significant damage

i played it in one sitting once (3 days i think)

this ranking is almost as ate as my face
