some general thoughts:

White wine: Chardonnay is a very popular white wine. Its typical to see it at weddings and fine restaurants. Though I'm not personally a big fan of it. I think its worth getting a mid-high end one. Cheap chardonnay is not worth it.

Whisky / Bourbon: I see people recommending American whisky like Jack Daniels, which is fine if the person likes the harsh bite. But some people prefer a smoother whisky. Canadian whiskys are usually smoother and blended. If you are really dedicated to having whisky, I'd get an American one like JD, and a Canadian import like Canadian Club (aged 6 or 12 years) or Crown royal.
Also if you're planning on getting Fireball, i'd recommend Southern Comfort instead (just a preference thing)

Vodka: Avoid cheap vodka - it tastes like rubbing alcohol. At a minimum low-end get something like Absolute, or Smirnoff. Grey Goose is overpriced for what it is. If you want high-end get something Russian. Serve it chilled.

Red wine: If you're not sure what else to get, consider a Cabernet Sauvignon. It has very bold in flavor with high tannins (very dry). Non-wine-drinkers might find it overpowering, but to somebody that loves red wines, its a good choice that is sure to please. Buy mid or high end.
