I distributed the 6/2 and got this

6x/2 + 12/ 2 = 9

3x + 6 = 9

3x = 3

x = 1

which is what we want

The 2 being next to (3) does not mean it is multiplied first.

There is no difference between 2(3) and 2*3, thus the multiplication should be done after 6÷2

It depends on whether or not it's a fraction. Most people, since they're using computers write out the "/" symbol, and it means a fraction.



This is the proper way to do it. I was mistaken at this also, but it's because people use a fraction instead of a division symbol.

put parenthesis around every numer and see what happens

(6)÷(2)[(1)+(2)]

god that reminds me of when I tutored elem school kids

The "/" sign does represent a fraction, though. It's just that the 2 and the 3 aren't grouped. They would only be grouped if they were (2*3).
