I slowly cut back over a 1.5 year period. Each day try to see how far you can make it in the day before having that first cigarette. Its not just an addiction, its a habit. Focus on breaking the habit, and cutting back will be easier. Don't rush yourself, and don't beat yourself up for slipping up. Each day is a clean slate. Make slow but steady progress. I dont know if that is a secret, but it's how i managed to quit. I tried quitting abruptly several times without success. That's why I turned to the slow and steady approach.
Quitting or cutting back with the intention of quitting needs to be a top priority in your life. You need to want it more than anything else. You need to have a reason that is paramount. For me, I quit for my health.

take a calendar and write down a number of cigarettes each day that you will allow yourself
for example, start with 6 per day for 10 days, then go down to 5 per day for the next 10 days and so on
then determine the time of day you will allow yourself to have them. By knowing exactly what time you will get the next one, you will have an easier time sticking to it
also, look for other tactics to negotiate with yourself. For example, you could say "If I succeed as having just 5 per day for 10 days, then I will reward myself by ordering a pizza" (or whatever you would consider a reward for yourself)
another thing is to try and change up your routine. Don't go to the same places or see the same people you always smoke around. Sights, sounds and smells trigger memories that make us want to repeat old behaviors
hmm some good tips
