Success being a quality of whatever we interact with being that much better off had we never done so to begin with.
i.e. A life successfully lived leaves somthing about this world changed for the better when that life ends than the world was before given life entered it. But additionally acts to avoid detrimental effects upon the same when possible.
An artist's masterpiece frequently is not appreciated until long after they have passed. And so we all are the artists of our own lives.
Similarly can be said of happiness:
http://blog.dictionary.com/happiness/I strive for both of these. I see a life spent in simple self gratification as a wasted life. A total failure.
If happiness is a state of mind. Success is a condition. One which requires an investment of energy.
The lazy never experience true fulfillment in either. And create zero sum conditions in their pursuit of happiness in place of positive sums.
Such philosophy applies to the rest of the cosmos as much as it does to our own limited perceptions of it as finite beings.
