The hammer costs $1.00 more than the nail.

If a nail is 10 cents, and the hammer is a dollar more than the nail, then 10 cents + $1.00 = $1.10 just for the hammer, but $1.20 for both. The question is how much does a hammer plus a nail cost. If a nail is 5 cents, and the hammer is $1.00 more, than it's .05 + 1.05 = $1.10

I'll be asking this question on all my interviews going forward so I can make the candidates sweat, but mainly to see them use critical thinking skills because really, why would I ask them such a simple question if the answer was 10 cents? ;)
