Research artists and their work, and then do even more research. It's important to look at the style that artists have in their portfolios since just because an artist has beautiful work in their portfolio doesn't necessarily mean they're talented in the style you're wanting. Check out customer reviews too, and don't get lost in Yelp reviews, but know that they're pretty helpful when navigating artists, not only from an artistic perspective but also from perspectives of professionalism, business, personality/attitude, etc.
Make sure it's a tattoo that you want or that has personal meaning to you. A tattoo doesn't have to have meaning, and it can "just be cool looking", but it has to look cool to you. Never get a tattoo because you're hoping other people will like it/think you're cool.
I would recommend drawing out your design, or have someone else draw it out, and then hang it up somewhere where you'll see it every day. Let it sit there for a couple months, and if you find that you're getting sick of seeing it the few times you see it throughout your day, then it's probably not a good idea to have it tattooed to your body. If you find that you're just as enthusiastic about it as you were when you first drew it out, then moving forward with it is totally fine. If/when you take your design to an artist and they draw up their version, make sure you're comfortable with editing their design or saying "no". Sometimes people get intimidated when getting their first tattoo and are too nervous/shy to speak up after seeing the artist's initial design. A professional artist absolutely will not mind making edits to make sure it's what you actually want.
In your OP you mention you want a tattoo that involves script, so I would recommend proofreading the spelling and grammar, and then proofreading it again. And then again. Don't be that person who gets a tattoo with incorrect spelling/grammar.
If you're going to get a visible tattoo, make sure you're completely comfortable with the fact that there are many people who look down on tattoos/people with tattoos, and that it may effect employment.
With all that said, I got my first and currently only tattoo last November. :]
