Also, this is a really stupid pet peeve of mine that reflects much more on my pedantic and bullshit desire to cling to proscriptivist language even though I know that it's bullshit than it does on you, but the originally common term for this is the very rarely used "Pique." As a noun, it means to be generally annoyed, especially because of your pride - usually used when someone does something 'in a fit of pique,' but as a verb it means to stimulate.
In all honesty, "Peak" is almost sensible enough that the replacement still makes sense on its own in a similar fashion to how "Chomping at the bit" still more or less means the same thing as the original "Champing at the bit," but it's a distinction worth making.
