I'm unfamiliar with these situations as I do not get in trouble with the law.

However, I would assume you should call whomever was having you appear and ask them what you should do, even if you have to turn yourself in and spend a night locked up somewhere

Not true. If he turns himself in, he'll definitely get a lighter sentence.
