Nah, it's honestly in large part the original source material, though the show has a way of making the problem significantly worse by stripping away the nuance. Like, I get that there's rape and torture and all that jazz, but there's no way of denying that the story goes out of its way to really ratchet that shit up through the roof with all the sensibilities of a twelve year old boy.
