my other question is this:

my wife was given an iphone 4 but it's locked to AOL or AT&T (can't remember which one cos drunk atm and dun want to wake her up to ask)

but we r in Vietnam atm and have been told (by the local iphone pros) that the iphone 4 cant be unlocked with that provider currently if u not in the USA

is this true? basically i want to know how to unlock her iphone cos jail breaking seems pointless imo

btw im paying fg for a solution to this ^

im going to explain it quite easy for you.. when you buy a phone (legally) the phone is locked to a operating company (normally when you buy iphone or other phones which you pay x amount each month) or you can buy a phone unlocked aka it can be used by any operating companies (this is normally for those phones where you pay full amount when you buy it and not the x amount each month. some phones (like iphone) is not possible to get unlocked in the western world (not 100% sure about this, but iirc its right)). if you want to bypass the locking you can jailbreak the phone (which is what you have to do, if you buy the phone in vietcong). when jailbreak is completed any operating companies can be used.

hope this explains what you're searching for.

thx for trying to explain norm

the iphone 4 was purchased legally in the USA but is locked to the american provider none-the-less, and unable to be unlocked in vietnam as we have been told.

the way i interpret jail breaking as it has been explained to me, is that the App store will not be accessible and hence all or any program updates will not be available instantly, which is not acceptable to me and therefore pointless.

having to frequently manually check for updates for every single program/app as opposed to being automatically informed of all latest updates through the App feature makes jail breaking not an option if this is the case.

no problem. not sure about the program update part though (never had any jailbreaked phones), but what you write about the software upg for the phone itself is correct though.
