if you don't drink beer ever and don't wanna look like a pussy, order a light beer.
if you think you can handle something with a strong taste, jump right in and ask them what they have for a stout
stouts are good. whatever they say, just be like "that one sounds good" or whatever.
you'll pretty much look like you know something about stouts.
or better yet, you could just be honest and be like "hey i know nothing about beer, what do you suggest"
that would even get a conversation going, and i doubt anybody is going to make fun of you for not being a beer expert

Avoid IPA's, approach stouts with caution. You should be good with a lager.
