I saw a guy on the train home from work today that I went to school with, looking smart in business attire like me. Looked him up on linkedin when I got home and it seems as though he is earning a lot for a 22 y/o, more than me I'd guess.

In that moment I felt a twang of jealousy and the compulsion to outdo him. In a way, that obsessive side of my personality propelled me to work hard and succeed, but I also think it is an unhealthy mindset to care so much about income, status etc.

Do you measure your own success in a similar fickle way to myself?

I only feel bad when im around others that have materialistic values

I don't measure success in a material fashion.

I don't solely judge success by materialistic standards, it's just a big factor, and I have to be the best at everything

Money is dumb, caring about it as a status symbol is dumber.

Besides, even if it weren't, someone's always going to be doing better than you, so it's a pretty soulless game to try to play. There's really only one winner and it's pretty much guaranteed not to be you.

At this point, yeah, mostly by salary/position/expected future job.



I don't need to be the one winner, I just want to be better off than my peers.

I've always measured my success by counting the number of victims I've had. But now I think I'm going to start counting the number of Earths I conquer instead.

yeah i get jealous sometimes. it has to do with the fact that as i am at the moment i cannot take care of anyone other than myself, which kind of makes me feel like a failure.
