I have heard people say that " Mother's Day " is simply a creation of the gift giving business . I have a much different opinion , because the rarest gift of all is one that can not be purchased and it is in very short supply .
That gift is Time !
As a young child my Mother once found need to discipline me so she pulled off her fuzzy pink bunny slipper and spanked me with it . When all was said and done it was not the slipper or myself that had truly been pained . It was my Mom .
You see before she spanked me she said " this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you " and being young I had no idea of what she was saying . After all , was it not I who was about to be spanked ? Many years later I understand the message she was imparting .
My Mother went through much discomfort and a good deal of pain to bring me into this world . She is the only person who I believe loved me unconditionally .
If I was hurting my Mom hurt twice as bad for me . When I was ill she suffered in a way I think only a Mother can . When I struggled and she told me " everything is going to be okay " , I knew she meant it and that she truly wished it so .
Seasons change . Years go by . The gift I would give her on this Mother's Day can no longer be had . That gift would be the simple gift of time , spent in her
warm embrace and her all healing love . She would have appreciated this more than any card or flowers and other gifts all rolled in one . And the ultimate recipient of this gift would be myself , for it would have been one more memory of her to hold onto when things are rough .
If you are reading this ask yourself " What does my Mom want most " ?
Do not be surprised if you ask her when she answers " nothing but some time with you " .
Please do not think she is being dismissive of the other gifts laid before her .
She is telling you that your time together is not forever and one day you will know this to be true . And how it must pain her to know this but she dare not speak it , for Mom's will take your pain unto themselves whenever they are able .
And one day you may find yourself sitting here , typing away , wishing that you had one more Mother's Day to share with her .
Give her your Time
Happy Mother's Day Mom
