Ethanol
Omsætningen i kroppen: alkohol optages let fra mave-tarmkanalen og kan allerede efter 5 minutter måles i blodet. Optagelseshastigheden bliver langsommere ved indtagelse af fedtholdige føde idet at mavesækken tømmes langsommere. Eftersom at alkohol er blandbar med vand og fedt, så passerer den indtagende alkohol hurtig over til mave-tarm-slimhinden ind i blodet, og blander sig med yderigere vand i kroppen. Det siges at legemsvægten hos mænd er 60 % og at den er lavere hos kvinder. Omkring 90 % af den indtagne alkohol vil blive metaboliseret ved en oxidationproces i levercellernes cytoplasma og mitokondirer. De 10 % vil blive omdannet til urin, afføring, sved og udånding.
Påvirkning på hjernen: hjernens GABAA receptor ionkanal påvirkes tydeligt af alkohol sådan at CL-ioner strømmer ind i cellen, hvorved neuronets indre miljø bliver mere negativt ladet som således gør det sværer for cellen at udløse aktionspotentialet. Områderne dette har indflydelse på er: hippocamous (hukommelsen), hjernestammen og lillehjerne. Netop i lillehjerne ses mange GABAA receptorer som er forklaringen på at koordinationsevnen bliver dårligere ved indtagelse af alkohol.

Circulation in the body:
Alcohol is easily assimilated from the stomach-intestine channel and it is traceable in the blood after only five minutes. The assimilation rate decreases upon consuming of adipose food as emptying the stomach slows up. Since alcohol is mixable with water and fat, the consumed amount of alcohol will quickly pass through the stomach-testine mucous membrane into the blood where it is further mixed with water from the body itself. It is known that 60 % of the weight of an average male body consists of water and that the percentage is a bit lower to the female side. An estimated 90 % of the consumed alcohol is getting metabolized by an oxidation process which is executed in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of the liver cells. The remaining 10 % is being transformed into urine, stools, sweat and expiration.
Influence on the brain:
The ion-channel in the GABAA receptors of the brain are clearly affected by this matter, so that chloride-ions is pouring into the cell whereby the internal environment of the neuron is becoming even more negatively charged which prevents the cell to release its Action Potential. The influenced areas are: hippocampus (the physical memory), the brainstem and the Cerebrellum (little brain). Many GABAA receptors are found in the Cerebrellum which brings us the explanation as to why the skill of coordination gets increasingly lacking by consuming alcohol.
