I've had some run-ins with a few of them in the past, but there are some good guys in there too. what's the story?

www.starcraft.theabyss.eu is a non-bnet gateway to the tournament-oriented community, there you can download SC+BW for free (no campaign mode) and play online.
It comes with a loader with anti-hack and some useful options. I usually play UMS with it, there are still some good mapmaking players around.
