So I'm a Barb and I'm doing Axe Proficiency. Good Idea? Bad Idea? Almost at lvl 2 axe proficiency now. Is this not going to help me in the future? Switch to sword? Ok to stay with Axe?

well, depends on what you like
axes = average dmg
swords = variable dmg
swords are cool if you like high critical hits, and i use them because they work on the first chars, barb/fighter/rogue, and also on samy and pala
else you can go with 1 set of axes and 1 set of daggers, this will fit for all the melee chars. up to you to decide which way you wanna go
