I try to avoid sleep when I'm injured or ill or whatever.
Its apparently proven that sleep helps and what not cause it helps your body recover faster, but once you wake up, its like the pain is starting all over again and reborn. I would just stay up and do something you enjoy to keep your mind away from that manner and drink plenty of liquids, and before you know it you'll be all good.
I would normally say sound advice, the catch is that I'm not dealing with some random or common illness. In actuality, it's the complete opposite. I'm dealing with something for the past month and a half or so that to this point, no doctor can diagnose, and because of that, treat or cure. And this isn't just a routine stop to a PCP and specialist, I've seen 20 doctors and not one of them has provided any indication of what I should do or where I should go to get better help. Everything they've looked at has come back negative.
Sleep is about the only thing that I can do, I just lay prone, spread all of my fingers and toes and limbs out and wait to fall asleep, and when I actually am asleep, I don't feel so sore. But waking up and immediately feeling the effects of it has really caused me some discomfort, even moreso than when I'm just awake and in pain. I can't work, I can't go to school (the cause of falling behind), I can't really leave the house. In fact I think I have left the house 4-5 times in a month.
I just keep taking painkillers that don't seem to work, and sit around wondering how many more days I can wake up feeling like this. My fingers, wrists, arms, feet, back, neck, ankles especially hurt. I just get to sit here and wait for the next appointment, maybe that will bring better news.
