I have been pondering this question for a while. I will answer it under the assumptiom that you have no gear, your fg will never increase, and you intend to play until you reset the ladder.
Now, it has already been said you will have to buy gear for a couple different classes.
I say start with a fighter or barb. Both can use the same gear: sword, heavy armor, and charms. Low EE armors and relatively inexpensive. The same can be said of low EE swords. With the weapon ratios of strength and dexterity in the Version 1.2, the ratio can be better served with swords on a barb or fighter.
I have seen some relatively reasonable strength charms on the mp.
You can use these same swords and heavy armors on the Samauri and Paladin. The swords can even be used on a ninja.
In between Paladin and Ninja is an awesome character, the Monk. A monk is a robed toon, using a staff or dagger, perhaps even a spear(I never used one).
Another option would be to start with a mage or hybrid rogue. Both can use dagger and staff as can the monk. You will need to spend some reall fg to get top of the line casting gear; therefore I dont suggest that.
HeadHunter can use scale armor, as can fighter, barb, sammy, paladin but only uses an axe and lightning and wild heals.
All of this is to say: there is not one character that you can gear that will carry you to ladder reset using the same gear. Using the assumptions I stated above, you can advance all the way to monk without a thought of buying new weapon/armor. This will allow you to pick up drops along the way, buy and sell, and be an ls machine.
I think in your situation, it would be in your best interest to join a guild that will help you climb. If you gear is not pretty decent, you will get kicked from games. If you join a guild like ours, we go out of our way in the tolerance department. We also give member discounts on items. Most of the time, many of us just toss it a mates way.
I suggest you take a look at the top 100 guilds. You will find them in the link I posted above. Look for guilds that are active. PapaRicks weekly update shows the gps for the week. Check them out. Look at their progrees, visit their guild chat if they have one. Get to know their people.That's about all I can think of at this point. You won't find 9,800 pages of topic here. I have found our members to be somewhat reserved in conversation and focused oon being the best ladder slasher guild on jsp. I remember when we had 4 guild points, lol. Now we have cracked 850. There are ls guilds with 100+ members and relativelt little activity. There are ls guilds with a few members that are contending with the big boys at the upper half of page one.
We need active slashers.
Our guild chat will consist of slashers only. We have a couple of D2 players that must be lovin' on Baal because they never post here. We have organized guild runs each and every night. We have day time players as well as the night slashers.
You will find our members helpful, one or two are very blunt, untactful, and down right hateful(me and Bob) but we kick arse in the catacombs. I am pretty sure all of our members are adults. If not, they have me fooled. There isn't much riff raff and foolishness found here. An occassional you tube post and often giving Chip a hard time is found, however.
Take your time. If you want to join the best, apply inside. If you don't really care who you join, there are a ton of other choices.
