I'm posting this just for John because he knows and understands my fascination with duct tape. A few days ago, I broke the arm of my chair (literally broke the bolt that holds the arm to the chair in half). And being that it is mid-semester of my PhD exams and that I really like this chair (I've had it for 5 years and spent way too much on it when I got it), I decided that I would just temporarily fix the chair arm. If my elementary knowledge of physics and engineering serves me right, by taping the chair across the bottom of the seat to the other chair arm should create a situation where any force generated on the right chair arm is equalized across the tape. The diagonal pieces of tape are for stability. Enjoy.
You are truly a priceless gem, Pat

Physics analysis sounds good; duct tape: 1, chair: 0.
