I suppose that the highest possible level would be either 74 for weapon / charm proficiencies, but that would be absolutely insane

there are various reasons why that would be incredibly difficult.
1. You can only gain proficiency points when you are fighting mobs 1 level or higher than your character level. So if you have 20 dagger prof, you won't gain any more prof until you are level 21. Once it gets above 35 then that's half the climb that you don't gain any proficiency points for it. And to get it that high would take epicly long, which brings me to my next point:
2. For each prof rank you gain, you need more proficiency points than before to gain another rank. So for example, going from rank 9 to rank 10 takes 10,000 points - which is the same as going from rank 0 to rank 4 (or so). I can only imagine how bad it gets when you get up to higher ranks, like 25 or 30. And the higher you get the more you'll lose each time you die, which brings me to my next point:
3. Each time you die you lose 10% (on feeder classes) total experience from the amount you had already. That's just a bunch of words to say that if you are at 50% and you die then you lose 10% of that (so 5%) and go down to 45%. Similarly, if you're at 90% and you die then you go down to 81%. This is the same for character experience as well as proficiency ranks (except skills, like fishing and transmuting). And finally, my last point:
4. The highest level of mobs in arena is 70, so in order to get to rank 74 you'd have to only fight well mobs or find trapdoors in catacombs. Also, you'd have to be above the level of your current proficiency rank, so when you finally get to rank 73 you'll have a hell of a time getting the last rank

But anyways, all of that just goes to show that it would be pretty amazing to see anyone above rank 50 in anything anytime soon. Proficiencies have been around for over a year and a half and there is only 1 person who has gotten above rank 30 so far. And that's Cole (McClain) and he's insane so I don't know if that should count or not

but anyways, that was just a very long explanation to say that 74 is probably the highest rank that is technically possible (in my opinion).
Pretty much this... now my adds...
McClain is insane... but how many of those profs did he get before Paul changed the Arena cheat?
... The cheat when you could kill monsters in Arena above Rank Level but below your character level?
I think I am more insane... only been playing with profs since June 2009... so I think I could beat him and his ranks...

I am the NUTTIEST NUT EVER
Addition: The fastest way to gain profs;
Arena...
How to Utilise the Ranks when you are getting High: Use a different weapon from Character Level 1 to Character level "X" above your Rank Level
Examples:
Rank5... Character Level 6
Rank10... Character Level 11
Rank15... Character Level 16
... ETC
Utilising More Ranks: (example BARB and my Ranks)
Rank1 Battelaxe... Level 1 to Level 5 use Battleaxe
Rank3 Club... Level 5 to Level 10 use Club
Rank7 Axe... Level 10 to Level 21 use Axe
Rank20 Sword... Level 21 to MQ use Sword
