So you tried a non-pc setup I take it? Just keep in mind that THX certification is purchased more so than "earned" - think licensed "fees". klipsch PC speakers are a good example of this. While they make exceptional home systems, their PC systems are anything but desirable, even THX certified systems. I bought klipsch PC speakers ProMedia 2.1 with less then expected sound quality. While the base is good, the satellites sound "tinny" and cheap. I ended up using a good pair of Sennheiser PX 100 head phones. They were pricey, but far better then the klipsch system.
For a top tier PC sound system, I would try something like such: Sound Blaster X-Fi PC Sound Card. Optical out is best, but not required. Take the signal from that and run it through a home Hi-Fi system of your choice and budget. Boston Acoustics may work with their full range satellite speakers and a sub-woofer.
Another thing to keep in mind, when possible, attach the optical disk (DvD/Blu-Ray) directly to the sound card. Nowadays, with serial cables, the sound is channeled though the CPU to the integrated on-board system. It's a tricky thing to get the sound dialed in with a comp without spending a small fortune.
BTW PvM, I'm into all sorts of things. One of those those things is linguistics - how words are used by the subconscious to convey how we see the world around us. It's a very interesting topic to delve into when one opens their mind and puts the ego aside.
The web bot made by "Cliff High" has some very interesting perspectives on this very topic. Funny to listen to him speak, when he states that some of the lower level computer programming languages are C++. Some of the more advanced languages are pro-logic based that can actually recompile themselves to "learn".
Yet another snow storm looms for tomorrow. One thing is for sure, I wouldn't integrate into the Eskimo way of life very well.
Note: "very well", meaning that it wouldn't be impossible, but it wouldn't be my preference of living.
