Best way to gain caster profs is to simply climb with one, it's been tried and tested many ways, but the fastest and most efficient way is to simply just cast, regen, cast more, repeat. Using lower level gear might get you more prof per mob, but you take 3 times as long to kill that one mob, so in fact you are holding yourself back. Solo is faster than catacombs, but you probably knew that already.
For the first 10 or 15 levels, I put a heal charm with max mana mod in my main slot and my attack charm in the other slot. It doesnt take much damage to kill the first several levels. I can use the heal when needed, of course, and blast away.
I also use max mana gear until level 15 or 20. I have a decent wind set lvl 1-50. I do change whole set up at lvl 20 but still play in the arena. It is helpful to have some mana regen gear on your toon in the event wellers arent dropping.
Another tip is to save your excess wellers from other toons to xfer to your mage. It keeps you from so much down time. I have been able to gain 4 in wind prof in just two weeks or less and that is only playing him randomly when nothing else is going on.
I have some on my max mana items on the MP for 1 or 2 fg. I am sure there is much more on the mp from other sellers.
