Hmm... this is a good way to look at it... the other way is this:
Dagger = rogue/mage/samurai/monk/ninja
Axe = fighter/barb/rogue/paladin/headhunter
... = 2x Set before reaching Warlock (staff only) and then carry on.
... another note... Scales/Robes 2x sets to cover them also... rogue for scales
With swords... once you get to monk... and monk is better off melee'ing than casting... so
you may end up hunting for those elusive EE/Int staffs to cover the Monk & Warlock abilities
EDIT: they both work... I started out on swords and did very well with that.
