I see both your points, however when we joined the guild, it was a "ladder slasher guild" which, to Rob's merit, was what he wanted.
Wes has a point where a lot of the big guilds are for friends to chill, but those guilds are full of inactives and the reason i chose to join this one back in the day was because I liked a close-knit community where you are not just a number in the pool of ~100 members in the guild.
To each his own, it was unfortunate that, as we are human, we do get bored of some things. It's Rob's guild, and he wanted active slashers, and thats just how it is.

I mean, although we are not in the guild anymore, we still have everyone on msn, so I dont see that big of a deal
