I like caster better for slashing. I seem to take way less damage as a caster. Not sure why because they have way crappier def and life. But I don't get hit near as hard as I do when playing melee. They also have the benefit that you can use the same gear all the way up the ladder(cept maybe headhunter). Every class uses different weapons. but all classes can use all spells. And really, the only important piece of gear you need is the spell. With a good spell you can slash naked if you wanted. Your weapon and armor is just a added bonus. Also, you can usually find spells around 50ee for most levels very cheap. 30-50fg each. This is why they are cheaper in the long run.
Melees have the benefit of lifeleech though. with the right gear, you can slash continously with no regen time. Its a spendy setup though, and you will most likely need a few sets of gear to accomidate all the different classes on the ladder. And even then, There are some classes you have to mage through anyway. (Alchemist=not able to use a weapon)
