Candiman you should stick to melée and keep your swords
then you have gear all the way up to monk and you can solo on melée I do it all the time
soloin on caster isent as easy as you would think. Some1 in my guild has  a 40-50 intel weapon and robe a 150ee mq charm and a 220ee heal and he can still only get a chain of 5-10
so imo stick to melée it will be  worth it in the long run
that's just my opinion  ;)

It's not all about chains, melee can obviously chain longer because they aren't tied down by mana amounts but casting kills faster - even on my casting samurai I kill mobs faster than someone with similar melee gear, even if you include my regen times.

It's really all preference though. Some people are casting people, some people are melee people, and some people are in between.

Yeah it is about preference
but as someone who's new to the game they should go melée so they can play the 1st few chars with pretty much the same gear
but like I said that's my opinion

Hi all... I have read pretty much everything so far...

Note for Andy... If you wish to remain in the circumstances that you are in, then you have to alter your "Stress Levels", this basically means that you have to take a different approach to what is happening around you.
1. Be the father you want to be and be happy that you ARE
2. Think like this: "Shit Happens... If it didn't... we would all get constipated and DIE", accept it for what it is
3. Become soulful to yourself first, then to those that are close to you... accept the failings of others as they are who they are.

Hope the above helps... I personally have a few issues in my life and my past that should have killed me by now... but I took on that approach and I do not have those ailings (sp).
______________________

@ Candiman and all relevant comments.

I can only talk about how I play the game... I can only talk about the gear I use... I can only talk about my perserverance (sp)... so please bare with me for now.

Melee / Caster / Hybrid:
This is where you need to make your decision and STICK to it... I started with melee and only 75fg to my name... my timezone meant that I had to solo more often than cata, so I worked on gaining ranks in swords... I did not have the gear, I did not have the fg... I worked hard and re-rolled my character many times... shit I even re-rolled @ level 5 many times... and also re-rolled my character at levels 40-60, because I could not solo effectively.

What I gained by doing the above:
1. Learnt to improve my build with crap gear that would sell for 1-5fg
2. Welled items during certain levels to help me make my build better for welling
3. Learnt that if you can MCC 8+, you can well items 95% at that level
4. After #1,2 & 3... I was able to well me some better items
5. Gained recognition from other people with great gear because my Ranking in sword was very High for the short time it took me... this led to being accepted in other groups

I changed to caster type character based on two things: AoE and because I got a level50 ice with 120% ee and could not sell it.
So I had to collect up a set, so I stayed melee and found some very nice low end gear, then I bought some gear of MP that was cheap, then I borrowed fg to fill in the gaps.
I have a decent Ice Collection... but hardly use it because I do not have the +int gear or heal charms to make a good mage... with that said... Hybrid is my build now.

You have gear that can be used... so use them to your best advantage... and sorry to say this... but I think you would be better off making a Rogue...
You can use your Swords when you need to melee dmg
You can use your charms when you want to gain profs
You can use heal charms later on in levels with cata group

I healed with my Rogue from level45 to MQ... the entire group... this is what I used, and it is by far not great:

Staff 135% ee (lvl55)
Robe 21 Dex + 21 Int (lvl20)
Main Charm: 41% heal mastery (lvl40)
Acc Charm: 87% Focus Heal (lvl55)

Rank11 Focus (helps)
Rank13 Staff (helps)
Pure intelligence build... no other stats anywhere else

I was averaging 290-310 heal
I was averaging 180-200 damage (which is not great, but better than any mage)

Note: during my time solo'ing, I could still Well items @ level 40 with 95% success rate, with lower heal and weapon ee... at times I would also just gain profs by casting my charms when I had alot of shrinables at hand.

Your gear is better than mine in some areas... you can get like 2 MQs out a week if you combine them to benefit you... you will find other items that you will need in your future build, so do not despair.

End... the wall has spoken... sorry if it was a long babble.

Informative reads.

I have a question. Would someone explaim the rerolling of a toon to build fast proficiencies? I know how to click the reroll button, obviously.
I dont know at what level to do so. It looks like you would have to get to a higher level each time you reroll for the prof count to actually start going up.

People think I am MAD... MAD I TELL YA.

Anyway... I re-rolled my toon based on how effective it was when solo'ing...
If my regen time was too long... and killing speed took too long... I would re-roll

Basically... if it takes you 20 minutes to solo 1 level, why not re-roll, in 20 minutes I can get from Level 1 to level 20, and if my Rank is 5, I can start gaining proficiencies at level 6, which would only take me like 4 minutes maximum to get there in Arena...

Above is just an idea to give you some idea.
