Download and update Microsoft Anti-Spyware (free)
Download and update Ad-Aware Free Edition (free)
Download and update either aVast Antivuris or AVG Free (both have free editions)

I use all 3 of the above (aVast on my laptop, AVG on pc) and have never once had an issue with viruses and/or spyware. Do a scan once a month.

Also, download and update cCleaner, a free pc cleaning utility. VERY handy and I use this every 2 weeks.
