i played fighter because at the time ee plates were really popular and i had them and swords
but im not adverse to trying something different i really like magician other than the fact that i could never find any good gear for it

Go for magician. Melee gear it's expensive on hardcore. Beside you can mq with mage even with low inteligence on weapon and armor.
