I will expand some on what Nev wrote.
Barbarians are great melee characters. You will want weapons with Enhanced Effect, that helps you deal more damage. Your +Max Life weapon is not going to cut it much longer, I suggest searching for weapons a Barbarian can use with Enhanced Effect as the primary mod. You can usually find ones with around 50% 'EE' for a few FG max, so be on the lookout. You will want to upgrade them every 10 or 15 levels if you can, or more frequently if you had more FG. Remember, a level 30 weapon with even 20% EE will do more damage than a level 5 weapon with 60% EE.
As for armor, you can either get Enhanced Effect on it for increased tanking, or go for +Stats (STR or DEX depending on the weapons you are using) I would recommend tanking to start out with, so look for armors with EE, and again, try to upgrade when you can, every 10-20 levels will be sufficient.
On charms, you will want to try for +Stats, again either STR or DEX depending on weapon. Same goes for statting your stat points, you want to add them where they are most beneficial. Example, if you are using SWORD or CLUB, go all STRENGTH. (check [URL=http://ladderslasher.d2jsp.org/index.php?g=3]HERE[/URL] for damage ratios)
When it comes time to Master Quest, it would benefit you to be in a Guild at that time, simply because you (as well as the guild) will get points for it. You should join a Guild that focuses on Ladder Slasher, and you are always welcome to give us a try if you wish!
