Albeit our gear isn't quite up to par just yet but we are working on it.  Jay has some decent caster gear and I have a half-ass melee setup going.
pun is planning on buying another melee set once we can make a little fg so we'll have plenty of gear to roll around.  We can definitely get you up to about level 20 or so but it's a grind after that (for now).

Most mages are built with a good junk of vita (I'd shoot for 50-55).  The rest goes into intel, of course.
The first 20ish level are a grind since you have crappy stats for melee but after that, you can cast fairly decently.

I am doing a mage right now and I am still on the melee portion.  I did a rogue last climb so the low levels were easier but the higher levels were a bit slower.

Yeah, 1-20 melee is best since you won't have much intel and you'll be pumping vita.  You could cast earlier if you had nicer gear, though.
Armor/Charm should probably be strength.  Some max life, dex, LPK, LPA, and things like that are good too.  I'd just focus on staying alive and killing as efficiently as you can.

I was never close to dieing on my first climb and I even welled like 20 or so things.  I had to run a few times, but you just have to stay smart about it.
