you dont necessarily need just life per kill

having a heavy armor plate mail lvl 0, 5, and 15 with ee will do it too.

1-20 is no problem no regen with 10 life per attack between your armor and charm if you have ee plate mails.

if you want to raise max life, you should get more vit earlier this game gives you as much additional max life as vit everytime you level.
