You are somewhat correct, but you need to remember that you *might* not pass your first try, so having those axes will be a good idea. Plus, paladin also uses axes, and he is unlocked after samurai.
Samurai can use sword / dagger / longsword. I would not worry too much about it just yet, because you will just spread your gear out too thin before you even need it. You may also find swords along your climb to save in case you do pass!
In short, do not worry much, but keep it in the back of your mind that you will need swords or daggers at some point for when you pass, so hang onto ones you find.

You sure can. As far as gold for loan goes, that makes little difference.
My 55 sword cost over 1,000fg, and I do still use it often, just not at this very moment. I have never been ripped off, but it is because I am very skeptical about giving people that I dont know very well super stuff. I have loaned some of the top slashers in this guild my complete sets at times, simply because I have grown to know them over time, and they are all trusty guys. That and if they ever did decide to run off with my gear, it would be the last we saw of them, and it would really be their loss more than mine.
I dont mean anything by what I am saying, and I am certainly not saying you would do this. I would say the same thing to any new person that joined asking to borrow insane gear, and I think most people would agree.
