I'm not sure he knew what he envisioned. One of his major points was that you could not know the form of communism until the material forces that shape society had been completely changed (the end of alienated labor, accumulation, etc...). The type of materialistic philosophy Marx was working from, and which he is given credit for, disallows for the a priori knowledge of epistemological concepts before material changes to a society.
