I would have picked it up and rubbed it onto his coat before throwing him into the cage. That way he has to smell his own shit all night long and learn his lesson the hard way. If you rub it on the back of the neck by his ears, that's particularly difficult to get off and he will almost always be getting a fresh waft in his face.
