Hey bud, yes it is only when casting that you can produce the area of affect attack. As of right now, melee has no "cool" tricks but there is another update coming, perhaps we will see one.
Anyone with an attack type charm (earth/wind/fire/ice/light) can do that, I have done it on my barbarian but of course he has very low mana and nil INT so it's not viable. Simply switch to your damage charm, hold CTRL then click a mob. You must be in a party of 2 or more, and you must be fighting at least 2 monsters for it to work.
Now if only they gave us Multi-healing...
