I however think Matchmaking is sorta luck in the terms of it being just luck who's on your team and who you run into.
1v1 -- you actually determine your own path, your own choices and the outcome of the game, not a bunch of morons.

1v1 is retarded, it's nothing but camping and timing powerups. Halo 3 is a team game, it's not like the previous two games where one person who could glitch the hardest could dominate another team. It's all about communication and teamwork.
I can impact a game (no matter the playlist, gametype, map) on every level except the highest levels of the MLG playlist, even when I go in alone. Players with decent individual skill (me) that also have an emphasis on good callouts and strategy can go in alone with random people and still put together a winning team.
And ofc, most of the time, I don't go in alone but with a team that I work very well with
