I haven’t played poe in a very long time :o might be time to give it another go soon, the last league I played a lot was beast, the one after that was pretty meh imo. Nothing at that point came close to how good legacy league was and it all felt like a disappointment :D

the game changed a lot since the last time you played. Target farming is imo a bit more rewarding/easier to access (or maybe I just got better :D ), but if you start you could get lost at first with the new atlas. I still think the game is a lot better now compared to the past, atleast in playability. About the league quality, I can think of only 2 leagues after legacy which were equally good, and the last 2 leagues were pretty meh. I hope for a good new league :P

You should just play it "for fun" imo, because if the objective is gaining fg you'll soon lose motivation as people will reach endgame way before you. There is really a lot added on the game each patch, this new season changes the endgame again and noone knows if it is profitable or not. If you want to play, my advice is doing a build which can easily kill bosses, so you can progress faster. Then you should focus on a single aspect of the game: either the atlas, the delve, the heist, etc. Just one of these. Learn one well and you'll start making progress and profit :D
