A major earthquake has struck of Christchurch, causing extensive damage to buildings and roads and cutting power to large areas.
The magnitude 7.1 quake occurred at 4.35am, 30 kilometres west of Christchurch, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres. There have been several aftershocks, the strongest at 5.2 magnitude, GNS Science reports.
Christchurch Hospital has treated two people seriously injured by falling masonry and glass.
One man, in his 50s, is in a serious condition in hospital after he was hit by a falling chimney. Another man has serious injuries after being cut by glass.
The hospital has treated a number of people with broken bones, and others with minor injuries such as cuts and bruises.
There has been extensive damage to buildings in the city and fallen masonry has blocked streets.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Canterbury region.
