The hatchet was my favorite when I played. Pickaxe would be my second favorite, but both are rare especially the pickaxe. I have a knife, but never used it. Hammer would be my favorite most common though.

the first one i found was far far west in the airport. then my friend found it same day in the trailer park..... i was like...really?

I found a pickaxe in the back of a truck in the trailer park at the very top of the map. I never see someone there and right next to it is Crystal Lake witch has been very helpful for me. I found an m4 and an m4 semi there before. And many other common guns. Theres a taxi just up the road from Crystal Lake with usually NASTY guns laying next to it.
