Simplicity is what makes the site easy on the eyes. If you go make a "modern-looking" logo, then the rest of the forums would require a total theme makeover. This isn't some vBulletin forum, and I appreciate the simple theme layout; pure use of CSS and HTML; no gradients whatsoever. Sorry, but you have a no from me.
