It's been suggested many times in the past and has always been rejected. This feature will likely never be available for members.
It's a privilege that only the moderator team members have.

The best thing you can do is just let the topics die off. It's likely that you will still receive pm's about an old item, but whether or not the topic is closed or open would probably make a minimal impact on the amount of people that are contacting you.
