In the past, the Graphic Design sub-forum contained a sanctioned "General Chat" thread where frequent visitors to the sub-forum (and new members, to a lesser degree) could chat about things that would otherwise be considered off-topic or require a separate thread.
Members of this sub-forum used the topic extensively, and before the last one was closed, it reached over 4000 pages.
Recently, all attempts at creating a general chat thread have failed , prompting users of the subforum to post a flood of topics that have been closed as spam.
As it turns out, the General Chat thread actually reduces spam in the sub-forum by giving memebers of the graphic design community a single, unified space to communicate.
Granted, there is a General Chat forum, but the Graphic Design section is something of a community, and we would much prefer to have our own thread to discuss topics of interest.
