I'm probably lacking some insight behind these rules, so maybe you guys can fill me in.

Signature Rules:
  • 400x150: Understandable - You don't want giant images cluttering the forum screen and distracting from content.
  • 70kb: Not Understandable - I explain below.

Why the limit should be increased:
  • No signatures are hosted on d2jsp.org (as far as I know), so increasing size limit would not affect d2jsp servers.
  • There are a bazillion cool new things (animations, coloring, shading) that you can do with photoshop nowadays which require more bytes. Genuinely impressive signature designs are being stifled by this limit.
  • A 70kb file, by today's internet speed standards, is very tiny. Even taking into account 30 posts on one screen-load, this is still a negligible number; dial-up is a thing of the past. (See: http://www.netindex.com/)
  • It would make the artists in the graphic design section happy!

I'm not saying increase it to 500kb so people can post giant-ass .gif files. But a reasonable increase to keep up with technological advance would be appropriate I would think. Let me know what you think. ^_^

Edit: Can a mod put "Increase 70kb Limit" in topic description? Forgot to add that. Thanks.

well i think its because the biger in size the signature the longer it take slower computers to desplay that image

but i think a 100kb limit would be understandable so i voted yes but i dout njag would consider changing it

it would be great that sens i myself make signatures and im finding myself getting better at photoshop etc that my creativity is limited due to size problem

but i can also see if everyone in 1 page has a 100kb signature it might take more time to load that page

but like you sead dial-up is a thing of the past but what you have to understand is that alote of people still have dial-up

not due to not afording it well mabey some but because of location problems alote of people live in places where internet providers like At&T and comcast do not reach

Appreciate the input. However, I don't think a reasonable increase in kb size would affect your computer speed noticeably; as computers have advanced just as much as internet speed has advanced.

Hmm, I'm still pretty sure dial-up users are a very small minority, but I'm not 100% sure on the exact ratio. And dial-up users always have the option of simply disabling signatures in their d2jsp settings. IMO tweaking any system for the benefit of a minority at the expense of the majority is bad "government" 101.

The issue with this could be that there are plenty of people browsing this forum via their cell phone, which makes the limit pretty reasonable.

Well firstly signatures should not even be shown on mobile phones, as internet speed is severely lacking compared to a PC. In fact, most images should not be shown to increase speeds. Most web designers design their sites to account for this. Secondly, I'm confident mobile phones are a minority on this forum.

If njaguar has some kind of analytics running (like google analytics) we could get a better idea of the ratios.

This.

And there are plenty of easy ways how to reduce the kbs without quality loss or something - If you don't know how to do it yourself, post in the Graphic Request forum, there are enough artists doing it for free.

The "Save for Web" feature in photoshop doesn't really help with smooth animations or certain kinds of color manipulation.

I wasn't exactly reffering to this, but then you could just take the image and reduce its kbs before adding the animation(s). :)

Right, but smooth animations require more frames also. This is weird we are talking by edit lmao.
