i think that if jsp sent you a message it would be much easier to know if someone had requested you as a friend. i go for days without looking at my friends list and typically the request just sits there. this isnt exactly a pressing issue but i think it could be usefull. and if a user did not want the messages there could be a setting in the account settings menu.
