Sounds like a good idea but some orb colors might not look good with star or some users might not want it so maybe just put it as an option.

There is no way to do this cross browser with css at this time in the web's evolution. Besides creating images for every name (cpu, bandwidth), there are no other options to do this. The image concept will also not be done at this time.
