While the new chat system is great in some aspects, having it replace a regular guild chat thread is a bad idea not only to me, but in the eyes of lots of other users. Given, the new chat makes it much easier for those who don't have vent to communicate with their guild mates, it also makes it more difficult for guild leaders to communicate with their guild members as far as updates are concerned.
While we do have guild noteboxes, not every member checks their guild's notebox. (even though they should)
Let's say for instance that I will be hosting a free guber for my guild. Even if i make an even using jsp's fantastic "My Events" system, I still have to notify my guild members. Normally this can be done by posting in my guild chat, with a link to the event for everyone to see. Now, without our guild chat threads, we either have to post in our guild notebox where chances are, nobody will see it, post in the instant messenger where the flood caused by lots of chat would make it almost unreadable, or manually pming every member in the guild. Regardless of how you look at it, it's not even practical.
My guess is that our old guild chats were closed due to excessive flaming or spamming of a guild chat. An easy solution for that would be to promote more people on jsp to meds or trusted tags. There are more than enough people on here who not only want the job, but who deserve it. Have meds watch over guild chats more. There are plenty of solutions to this problem without just removing chat threads all together.
The new instant messenger is great for talking among friends and for those who don't have vent, but not practical as far as a guild is concerned.
GET THEM USED TO IT.. that's all you need and the rest of your problem is gone.
